## Keep NotebookLM for questions about your own sources.

FluxGravity authored this comparison and is listed last, for one narrow fit: turning a written brief into finished documents and decks. PDF upload, reading and chat are not listed on FluxGravity's pricing page and are not verified. For questions about your own sources, this page points to Gemini Notebook and the tools below, with every price and limit taken from the vendors' own pages.
- **Ask** questions about your own sources
- **Compare** file limits, usage caps and price
- **Create** finished documents and decks from a brief

## Should you stay with NotebookLM or switch?

**Answer:** Stay with NotebookLM, now called Gemini Notebook, if your main job is asking questions about your own sources and checking citations. Look elsewhere if you need a general assistant, page-based pricing, offline use or a different kind of output.

Google says chat answers in Gemini Notebook use only data from your sources, with citations you can open to see the quoted text. It is free to use with a Google account, and paid access comes through Google AI plans from $4.99 a month. Google renamed NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook in July 2026 and says it is the same product.

People look elsewhere for documented reasons, covered below: they want a general assistant that is not limited to their sources, pricing by the page, a tool that runs on their own computer, larger single files, or a finished document or deck written from a brief. Each alternative below lists its price, limits, best use and who should skip it.
- Stay if you want sourced answers with citations.
- Switch for a general assistant, page-based pricing, offline use or larger files.
- Use FluxGravity, listed last, only for a document or deck written from a brief.

## Why do people look for NotebookLM alternatives?

**Answer:** Google's pages do not say why people switch, so these are the documented limits that can matter: compute-based usage caps, a 50-source cap on the free tier, answers limited to your sources, text-only web imports, no recovery of deleted notes, and regional or age conditions.

Usage is compute-based. Google says your quota refreshes every 5 hours until you reach a weekly limit, that limits may change, and that you can defer outputs such as Video Overviews or Slide Decks for later. The free tier allows up to 50 sources per notebook, and each source can hold up to 500,000 words or 200 MB.

Chat answers use only your sources, so creative requests such as rewriting a story may be refused. Web imports take only the text of a page, paywalled pages are not supported, and YouTube imports need captions. Google also says there is currently no way to recover deleted notes.

Access has conditions. Google AI Plus, Pro and Ultra plans are only available in specific regions, Slide Decks are for users over 18, work and school accounts need the organization's administrator to turn on access, and Google's plan table lists watermark removal as not available on the free tier and Plus.
- Limits: compute-based, a weekly cap, and they may change.
- Content: sources only, text-only web imports, no deleted-note recovery.
- Access: regions, 18+ features and administrator approval for work accounts.

## What does NotebookLM cost today, and what does it include?

**Answer:** Gemini Notebook is free with standard limits and 50 sources per notebook. Google AI Plus ($4.99 a month), Pro ($19.99) and Ultra ($99.99 or $199.99) add higher limits.

Usage limits are two times standard on Plus, four times on Pro, and 5x or 20x Pro on the two Ultra plans. Sources per notebook are 100 on Plus, 300 on Pro, and 500 or 600 on the two Ultra plans.

Supported sources include PDFs, Word, PowerPoint, text, Markdown, CSV and ePub files, Google Docs and Slides, images, audio, web pages and public YouTube videos with captions. Google says the limit is 500,000 words per source or 200 MB for local uploads, with no page limit, and that Gemini Notebook supports 80+ languages.

Outputs include study guides, briefings, Audio Overviews, mind maps, Video Overviews, flashcards and slide decks, which download as PDF or PowerPoint (.pptx). Google says it does not use your content to train its models unless you share feedback. Our NotebookLM pricing guide lists every plan and limit.
- Free: standard limits and 50 sources per notebook.
- Plus $4.99 and Pro $19.99: 2x and 4x standard limits.
- Ultra $99.99 or $199.99: 5x or 20x Pro usage.

## ChatGPT: a general assistant that can read your uploaded files

**Answer:** ChatGPT Free costs $0 with 3 file uploads a day, Go costs $8 a month, Plus costs $20 and Pro starts at $100, and documents can be up to 512 MB each.

OpenAI says you can upload any PDF to ChatGPT and ask questions, and that ChatGPT reads the document so it can answer based on its knowledge of the content. It accepts DOCX, PDF and TXT documents, spreadsheets and PPTX presentations, and audio on paid plans, and can summarize, compare documents or turn a presentation into a document.

Go may include ads. Documents and presentations can be up to 512 MB per file, text and document files are capped at 2 million tokens, and you can upload up to 80 files every 3 hours. Projects hold up to 5 files on Free and 25 on Go and Plus, and each custom GPT takes 10 knowledge files.

Best for: one assistant for files, writing and other tasks, including large single documents of up to 512 MB. Not for: a tool whose answers are limited to your files by design. OpenAI describes ChatGPT answering from its knowledge of the content, while Google describes Gemini Notebook as using only your sources.
- Fits: one general assistant that also reads your files.
- Not for: answers confined to your own sources.
- Price: Free $0, Go $8, Plus $20, Pro from $100 a month.

## Claude: large files and a long context window in one assistant

**Answer:** Claude Free costs $0 with up to 5 projects, Pro costs $20 a month or $17 a month billed annually, and Claude accepts files of 500 MB each, up to 20 per chat, and PDFs up to 1,000 pages.

Anthropic's help center lists PDF, DOCX, CSV, TXT, HTML, ODT, RTF, EPUB and JSON files, plus XLSX when code execution and file creation are on. Claude reads text and visuals in PDFs of 100 pages or fewer and text only in PDFs of 101 to 1,000 pages. Files can sit in one chat or in a project's Files section for use across conversations.

Project files are limited to 30 MB each and can be unlimited in number, but the total content must fit Claude's context window, which its pricing page lists as up to 1M and varying by model. Pro costs $17 a month with an annual subscription discount ($200 billed up front) or $20 if billed monthly. Max starts at $100, and usage limits apply.

Best for: long documents and mixed work in a general assistant. Not for: anyone who needs a documented sources-only mode, because the pages we read do not describe one. Model training on individual plans is listed as opt-out.
- Fits: long documents inside a general assistant.
- Not for: a documented sources-only mode (none found).
- Price: Free $0; Pro $20 monthly or $17 billed annually; Max from $100.

## ChatPDF: PDF chat with page and folder caps

**Answer:** ChatPDF's free plan analyzes 2 documents a day, and ChatPDF Plus costs $14.99 a month or $7.58 a month billed yearly, with unlimited PDFs and questions, 2,000 pages per PDF and 50 PDFs per folder.

ChatPDF accepts PDF, Word, PowerPoint, Markdown and text files, supports multi-file chats in folders, links answers to citations in the document, and says files are encrypted in transfer and in storage. Its home page also lists summary, flashcards, slides, AI writer and research tools.

The Plus upgrade dialog lists unlimited PDFs, unlimited questions, 2,000 pages per PDF, 50 PDFs per folder and a high quality model. Monthly billing is $14.99 and yearly billing is $7.58 a month, which ChatPDF labels as saving 50%.

Best for: quick questions about single PDFs and folders with a flat monthly price. Not for: libraries above 50 PDFs in a folder, or anyone who needs more than 2 free documents a day.
- Fits: quick questions about single PDFs and small folders.
- Not for: more than 50 PDFs per folder, or more than 2 free documents a day.
- Price: Free; Plus $14.99 monthly or $7.58 a month billed yearly.

## Humata: document Q&A priced by the page

**Answer:** Humata's free plan covers 60 pages, Expert costs $9.99 a month with 500 pages a month for up to 3 users, and Team costs $49 per user a month with 5,000 pages and up to 10 people.

Humata meters usage in pages. Each plan includes a monthly allowance of free pages, and extra pages cost $0.02 each on Expert and $0.01 on Team. OCR, folder-level permissions and department-level permissions are listed from Team, and a SOC-2 certificate is listed on Enterprise. Humata says no credit card is required to start and you can cancel at any time.

Best for: occasional document questions where you pay for the pages you use. Not for: heavy reading, where per-page charges add up. By our arithmetic, reading 1,000 pages beyond the 500 included on Expert adds $20.
- Fits: occasional questions on documents, paid by the page.
- Not for: heavy reading, where extra pages add up.
- Price: Free $0; Expert $9.99; Team $49 per user a month.

## AskYourPDF: daily document and question caps by plan

**Answer:** AskYourPDF's free plan allows 1 document a day with 100 pages per document, Premium costs $14.99 a month or $11.99 billed yearly, and Pro costs $19.99 a month or $14.99 billed yearly with 6,000 pages per document.

AskYourPDF lists document, question and conversation caps per day for each plan. Free allows 15 MB uploads, 50 questions and 3 conversations a day. Premium allows 2,500 pages per document, 31 MB, 50 documents, 1,200 questions and 50 conversations a day. Pro allows 6,000 pages per document, 877 MB and 150 documents a day.

Paid plans list chat with multiple documents (a Knowledge Base), a summarisation service, OCR and a Chrome extension. Some AI models on its list need credits, and Premium includes 10 free credits while Pro includes 30. Its page offers annual billing at 25% off.

Best for: users who want daily caps spelled out and large single documents on Pro. Not for: anyone who wants a flat monthly price without model credits.
- Fits: large single documents and clearly stated daily caps.
- Not for: a flat price with no model credits.
- Price: Free; Premium $14.99 or $11.99; Pro $19.99 or $14.99 a month.

## Which NotebookLM alternatives work offline?

**Answer:** GPT4All says it runs on your device with no cloud required and offers local document chat, and AnythingLLM says it runs entirely on your computer and is free to download. We did not test either.

GPT4All, from Nomic, says it delivers private AI on your device with no cloud required and no data leaving your machine. It runs open-source models on Windows, macOS and Linux and includes local document chat called LocalDocs. Its page does not state a GPT4All price, and a banner mentions separate Nomic plans from $20 a month.

AnythingLLM says it is a private AI assistant that runs entirely on your computer, with no accounts, API keys or token limits. It lets you chat with documents locally on macOS, Windows and Linux, and it recommends a model to fit your hardware. The download is free.

Treat both as options to try, not like-for-like replacements, because results depend on the model and the computer you use. The other tools in this guide are online services.
- GPT4All: no cloud required; price not stated.
- AnythingLLM: runs on your computer; free download.
- Neither was tested for this page.

## How is NotebookLM different from ChatGPT?

**Answer:** Google says Gemini Notebook chat answers use only data from your sources and cite them, while OpenAI describes ChatGPT as reading an uploaded file so it can answer from its knowledge of the content, with different file limits and plans.

In Gemini Notebook you build a notebook of up to 50 sources on the free tier, and up to 600 on the top Ultra plan, and chat answers cite quotes from those sources. In ChatGPT you attach files to a conversation or a project, with up to 5 files per project on Free and 25 on Plus.

On price, Gemini Notebook is free with limits and Google AI Pro is $19.99 a month, while ChatGPT Plus is $20 a month. Gemini Notebook generates Audio Overviews and mind maps, Video Overviews and slide decks inside the notebook. ChatGPT's pricing page lists Projects, scheduled tasks and custom GPTs on Plus.
- Gemini Notebook: sourced answers with citations.
- ChatGPT: a general assistant that reads uploaded files.
- Check file limits and plan prices before you switch.

## Where does FluxGravity fit, and where does it not?

**Answer:** FluxGravity fits one narrow job: turning a written brief into finished documents and decks. PDF upload, reading and chat are not listed on FluxGravity's pricing page and are not verified, so use Gemini Notebook or the tools above to ask questions about your own sources.

FluxGravity wrote this page and lists itself last. FluxGravity is made by FluxNote, LLC. It is an AI workspace and agent that turns a brief into finished work: documents, PDFs, slide decks, spreadsheets and graphs, videos, research reports and social posts.

Plans cost $0, $5, $20 and $50 a month, or $4, $16 and $40 a month billed annually. Free has 100 one-time credits, and paid plans have 650, 2,800 and 7,000 credits a month that renew monthly and do not roll over. Limits by plan are document and PDF pages of 3, 10, 15 and 30, and slides of 8, 25, 60 and 120. The Research workflows from Spark list deep research reports and web and Reddit research.

Other tools overlap with that job. Gemini Notebook generates slide decks from your sources and downloads them as PDF or PowerPoint, and Google's chat help lists experimental features that can create Word, Excel and PowerPoint files with or without sources. ChatGPT Slides can turn files or an outline into slides and export to PowerPoint or Google Slides on Pro, Business and Enterprise plans. Claude's pricing page lists Slides and Docs on every plan. We did not verify PowerPoint or Google Slides export for FluxGravity, and we did not test any of these tools, so this page does not rank them.

A practical split, untested: do the reading in Gemini Notebook or another tool above, write your own brief from what you learn, and use FluxGravity only for the step that turns a brief into a document or deck.
- Fits: a finished document or deck written from a brief.
- Limits by plan: 3, 10, 15, 30 document pages; 8, 25, 60, 120 slides.
- Not verified: PDF upload, reading and chat; PowerPoint and Google Slides export.

## How do you choose a NotebookLM alternative?

**Answer:** Choose by the job: Gemini Notebook for sourced answers, ChatGPT or Claude for a general assistant that reads files, ChatPDF, Humata or AskYourPDF for dedicated document chat with visible caps, GPT4All or AnythingLLM for local use, and FluxGravity for a document or deck written from a brief.

Start with your largest file. ChatGPT allows 512 MB per file and Claude 500 MB in chats, ChatPDF Plus allows 2,000 pages per PDF and AskYourPDF Pro 6,000 pages per document, and Gemini Notebook allows 500,000 words per source with no page limit. Then check how usage is capped: Gemini Notebook by compute, ChatGPT by uploads per day on Free, Humata by pages, and AskYourPDF by documents and questions per day.

Test one real file on a free plan before you pay: Gemini Notebook's free tier, ChatPDF's 2 documents a day, Humata's 60 pages, AskYourPDF's 1 document a day or ChatGPT's 3 uploads a day. Open the cited passages and compare them with the source, because none of these pages promises error-free answers.
- Largest file first, then usage caps.
- Test one real file on a free plan.
- Verify cited passages against the source.

## Frequently asked questions

### What are some alternatives to NotebookLM that are offline?

GPT4All says it delivers private AI on your device with no cloud required and offers local document chat, and AnythingLLM says it runs entirely on your computer, lets you chat with documents and is free to download. We did not test either. The other tools in this guide are online services.

### Is NotebookLM AI free to use?

Yes. Gemini Notebook, the new name for NotebookLM, is free with a Google account, with standard usage limits, 100 notebooks per user and up to 50 sources per notebook. Higher limits cost money through Google AI plans at $4.99, $19.99 and from $99.99 a month.

### How is NotebookLM different from ChatGPT?

Google says Gemini Notebook chat answers use only data from your sources and cite them. OpenAI describes ChatGPT as reading an uploaded PDF so it can answer based on its knowledge of the content, and it works as a general assistant. File limits differ too: 50 sources per notebook on Gemini Notebook's free tier, against 5 files per project on ChatGPT Free.

### Is NotebookLM now called Gemini Notebook?

Yes. Google announced on July 16, 2026 that it was renaming NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook and called it the same standalone product. Existing notebooks remain accessible.

### Which NotebookLM alternative is best for PDFs?

No official page ranks them, and we did not test any. The documented differences are limits: ChatPDF Plus allows 2,000 pages per PDF, AskYourPDF Pro allows 6,000 pages per document, Humata charges per page after a monthly allowance, ChatGPT allows 512 MB per file and Claude accepts PDFs up to 1,000 pages. Pick by your largest file and how often you ask questions.

### Can ChatGPT or Claude replace NotebookLM?

For many file tasks they can read your uploads, and both are general assistants. ChatGPT Plus costs $20 a month and Claude Pro costs $20 monthly or $17 a month billed annually. Google describes Gemini Notebook as answering only from your sources with citations, so try one real file on each free plan first.

### How much do NotebookLM alternatives cost?

Entry paid plans on the official pages: Google AI Plus $4.99 a month for Gemini Notebook, AskYourPDF Premium $14.99 monthly or $11.99 billed yearly, ChatGPT Go $8 or Plus $20, ChatPDF Plus $14.99 monthly or $7.58 billed yearly, Claude Pro $20 monthly or $17 billed annually, FluxGravity Spark $5 monthly or $4 billed annually, and Humata Expert $9.99. AnythingLLM is a free download and GPT4All's price is not stated. Limits are measured in different units, so compare file limits too.

### Can Gemini Notebook export slides to PowerPoint?

Yes. Google's help center says you can download a generated Slide Deck as a PDF or a PowerPoint (.pptx) file. Slide Decks are for users over 18, and Google says they may contain visual or factual inaccuracies.

### Is FluxGravity an alternative to NotebookLM?

For a different, narrow job only: turning a written brief into finished documents and decks, with document and PDF page limits of 3, 10, 15 and 30 and slide limits of 8, 25, 60 and 120 by plan. PDF upload, reading and chat are not listed on FluxGravity's pricing page and are not verified. FluxGravity wrote this page.

### How was this page researched?

We read Google's Gemini Notebook site, help center, plan pages and blog, each alternative's pricing and file-limit pages, and FluxGravity's pricing page on October 18, 2026. We did not run any tool or test output. Where a page did not state a number, we wrote not stated or not verified.
